March 17, 2017

On March 17, 2017 Michael Casper, President & CEO of UltraSource, Inc., delivered a business presentation to a Financial Algebra class at Soughegan High School (SHS) in Amherst, NH. The presentation gave background about UltraSource and thin film manufacturing along with explaining some of the customer applications, how he started UltraSource, what goes into running a business, hiring employees, and some of the risks and rewards of being a business owner. The students, taught by Ms. Jennifer Bonsu-Anane, have been studying modeling data with equations to make decisions about supply & demand, analyzing fixed & variable expenses, graphing, and calculating profit. Casper gave the class various scenarios where algebra is used to run or improve his business.

Students provided positive feedback after the presentation and asked to see more pictures of manufacturing in a cleanroom, as well as videos of the products that use the thin film circuits. This is the third year that Casper has presented to Bonsu-Anane’s class.

USI believes in the importance of cultivating and supporting S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) relationships with young people. Said Casper, “I’ve long been a believer in the economic power of great jobs, and I think manufacturing and engineering companies provide many great jobs. I talk to these kids because I hope to educate and inspire them. The path to a manufacturing or engineering career won’t always necessarily happen in a “shop class” or an engineering class. The seeds for a career can be planted in many different ways and I have a great story to tell.”
